Privacy Policy
This policy explains what information the App uses, why, and who it is shared with. The short version: the App has no accounts, no ads, and no analytics. We don't sell your data, and we don't track you across other apps or websites. Your settings stay on your device.
1. Information the App uses
Your location (only while you're using the App)
If you allow it, the App uses your device's location only while the App is open and in use. It does not use location in the background. We use it to:
- set your current position as the starting point of a trip,
- find attractions, national parks, campgrounds, gas stations, truck stops, and EV chargers near you or along your route.
Location permission is optional. You can say no and type a starting point instead. You can turn location access off any time in your device settings (iOS: Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services; Android: Settings > Location > App permissions).
Trip details and searches you enter
To plan a trip, the App uses the start point, destination, and any keyword searches you enter (for example, "waterfalls" or "BBQ"). It also uses your trip preferences, such as daily mile and driving-hour limits, lodging type (camping, hotels, Airbnb, VRBO), fuel type (gasoline, diesel, or EV), and preferred map app (Google Maps or Apple Maps).
Settings stored on your device
Your trip preferences (the settings listed above) are stored only on your device. They are never sent to our server, and we can't see them. Deleting the App deletes this data. The App doesn't save trips. The trip you're planning is kept in memory only while the App is running.
What we do NOT collect
- No account, name, email address, or phone number
- No contacts, photos, or files
- No payment information
- No advertising identifiers, and no ads
- No analytics or tracking tools
- No background location
2. How information is shared with service providers
To show routes and places, the App sends requests to the map and data services listed below. Requests to Google Maps Platform and Recreation.gov pass through our server (see "Our server" below). Other requests go straight from your device to the service. Depending on the feature, a request can include your current location or the coordinates of your route, the start point and destination you entered, and your search keywords. These services get only what they need to answer the request. We don't send them your name or any account details, because the App doesn't have any. Like any internet service, they may also see your device's IP address.
| Service | What it's used for | Privacy policy |
|---|---|---|
| Google Maps Platform (Routes API, Places API, maps) | Routes, driving times, attractions, gas stations, truck stops, lodging, keyword search | https://policies.google.com/privacy |
| Apple Maps / MapKit (if you choose Apple Maps) | Maps and navigation | https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/ |
| National Park Service API | National park info along your route | https://www.nps.gov/aboutus/privacy.htm |
| Recreation.gov RIDB | Campgrounds and recreation areas | https://www.recreation.gov/privacy-policy |
| U.S. Department of Energy Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC), via the NREL/NLR developer API (called directly from your phone in EV mode) | EV charging stations along your route | https://www.nlr.gov/security/ |
Our server. Your searches and coordinates pass through our server only so it can fetch results from Google and Recreation.gov. To avoid repeat lookups, results are held briefly in an in-memory cache (up to 24 hours) and then discarded. Your searches and coordinates are never written to disk, stored in a database, or logged. Request logging has been turned off since October 10, 2026. Request logs saved before that date expire and are deleted within 30 days. Error logs don't contain search terms.
IP addresses. Our server briefly processes your device's IP address to limit how many requests each device can make per minute (rate limiting). IP addresses are kept only in that in-memory rate limiter. They aren't logged, written to disk, or stored anywhere else.
EV chargers. When EV mode is on, the App calls the NREL/NLR Alternative Fuel Stations API (developer.nlr.gov) directly from your phone, not through our server, and sends the line of your route so it can find chargers along it. NLR's privacy notice (https://www.nlr.gov/security/) applies to that data.
Google's own privacy policy (https://policies.google.com/privacy) applies to the data Google receives, and Recreation.gov's policy applies to the data it receives.
Google Maps features. The App uses Google Maps features and content. By using them, you agree to the Google Maps/Google Earth Additional Terms of Service (https://maps.google.com/help/terms_maps/) and the Google Privacy Policy (https://policies.google.com/privacy).
Links and other apps. If you tap Open in Google Maps or Open in Apple Maps, your route is passed to that app for turn-by-turn navigation. If you tap an Airbnb or VRBO search link, that website or app opens with a search for the area you picked. Once you leave our App, the other company's privacy policy applies, not this one.
We don't sell or rent your information, and we don't share it for advertising.
3. How long information is kept
- On your device: your settings stay until you change them or uninstall the App. The trip you're planning isn't saved and is gone when the App closes.
- By us: searches and coordinates are held only briefly in our server's in-memory cache (up to 24 hours) and are never stored or logged. Request logs saved before October 10, 2026 expire within 30 days.
- By the service providers above: under their own privacy policies.
4. Your choices and rights
- Location: allow or deny it, or change it any time in your device settings.
- Delete your data: uninstall the App to delete your settings. Trips aren't saved. There are no accounts, and we don't store your searches or location on our server, so there's no server data to delete.
- Questions or requests: email us at support@mymilemarker.app. If you live somewhere that gives you privacy rights (for example, California or other US states), you can contact us to use them. Because we don't hold personal information about you, there's usually nothing on our side to access or delete, but we'll answer every request.
5. Children
The App is a general travel tool and isn't directed to children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children. If you think a child has given us information, contact us and we'll help.
6. Security
All requests to the services above are sent over encrypted (HTTPS) connections. Your settings are protected by your device's built-in security.
7. Not affiliated
The App is an independent app. It isn't affiliated with or endorsed by the National Park Service, Recreation.gov, the U.S. Department of Energy, Google, Apple, Airbnb, or VRBO. Place details, hours, prices, and availability come from third parties and may change. Always check before you go, and drive safely. Don't use the App while driving.
8. Changes to this policy
If we change how the App handles information (for example, by adding accounts, analytics, or ads), we'll update this policy and the effective date above before the change takes effect. If the change is significant, we'll also note it in the App or in the app store release notes.
